Pre MBA FAQ's

Why do an MBA?

If you want to be part of the business world, an MBA is a must in most circumstances. It arms you with skills and knowledge that are of help at every stage of your career. Even though there are some exceptional individuals who have reached the top without an MBA, an MBA provides a definite edge, especially while climbing the top few rungs of the coprorate ladder.

Peple often quote the example of Dhirubhai Ambani as an example of non-MBA's making it big in business. I agree but then one has to consider that he did not have the opportunity to do an MBA. I will also add that he made his sons do an MBA, that too from the very best schools in the world. Dhirubhai would not let his sons spend two years in a college if he thought it was not going to be helpful.

Should the recession influence my decision to do an MBA?

The recession is really bad and all will get affected by it. Non-MBAs are likely to be more affected than MBAs. If you are currently in a job, better to do an MBA and wait out the recession than to continue in a job. A job in these years will be less rewarding in terms of increments, bonuses, etc. Also, there will be the constant fear of retrenchment.

If you are currently just out of college and looking for a job; don't waste your time. You may get a job profile well below your expectations. MBA colleges in India are not very biased against freshers, so plan to ride out the recession in a B-school.

How should I decide on the b-school to join?

Most students go by the rankings published by by magazines, websites, etc. At most use these rankings as one of the inputs. Talk to people connected with the B-school. Get relevant information about curriculum, academic environment and placements. Visit the b-schools. Nothing beats first hand information about the campus. Take the advice of seniors, well wishers, family friends and finally make your choice.
